2. Byte Sharing- PD Sessions from February 25th all day- BYTE Conference, Portage, MB BYTE wiki 2011


Portable Apps Now you can carry your favorite computer programs along with all of your bookmarks, settings, email and more with you. Use them on any Windows computer. All without leaving any personal data behind.


Lino is very similar to Wallwisher. It is essentially a digital bulletin board to reflect anything. The neat thing is that you can collaborate with another class and add to it at the same time. You can upload pictures instantly through blackberry or email. You can even text a message and it will appear on the registered screen. The presenters shared a sample of how their Grade 11 and Kindergarten classes created one together-the Kindergarten's illustrations were uploaded and the Grade 11 students added text to match the illustration. Cacoo is similar to Inspiration or Kidspiration in which you can create diagrams. You can easily export these into a PDF or Word file. http://cacoo.com/
Mindmeister is another mind mapping site. http://www.mindmeister.com/
Tagxedo is the "fancier" version of Wordle. Great for vocabulary, word work, assessment, etc. http://www.tagxedo.com/
Wix is a free flash website builder. You can add mini pages, google maps, music/video player, etc. This may be used in addition to or instead of our classroom websites, or students can create websites reflecting on a specific cluster. http://www.wix.com/ I thought this would be a really cool tool to use for Heritage Fair. Visuwords is an online graphical dictionary: http://www.visuwords.com/
Storybird is a collaborative story telling tool. http://storybird.com/ Perhaps a MARG centre/project?
Toondoo is the "world's fastest way to create cartoons"! Yet another way to engage our writers. http://www.toondoo.com/
Another interesting discussion was on "50 Web 2.0 Ways To tell a Story". The name says it all, although the presnter said it's more like 67 ways by now. Can't find the exact site-it's not posted on the BYTE wiki yet, however I found this link when typing it in to google: http://cogdogroo.wikispaces.com/StoryTools
I also overheard some primary teachers talking about their calendar routine. They were talking about how great "Mr. Harry's Kindergarten Channel" page on youtube is for songs on the days of the week and months of the year. I tried googling it to find it, but am not sure this is the correct link: http://www.youtube.com/user/harrykindergarten
Finally, I learned about iEARN (International Education and Resource Network) which includes so many of the LwICT outcome using networked classrooms. basically, you register and can be partnered with classes around the world and work on a project together while communicating using various tools-email, blogs, elleuminate sessions. I know a lot of the Social Studies curriculums study communities and countries around the world, so what better inquiry than to talk to children from those locations? I thought of your Social Studies program... I also emailed some girls I graduated from U of W with who are teaching in Egypt and Thailand to see how equipped with technology they are, so if anyone is interested I have the contacts.

Socrative is for interaction. You ask the questions. Your student responds with any laptop/handheld device. Try it for yourself by playing teacher on this device, and Student on a second computer/smartphone.

Instructions:
- Student: Open a second computer/smartphone and go to m.socrative.com
- Student: Join the Room 5942 (for today)
- Teacher: ask a question out loud and press "Yes / No" button
- Student: Respond Yes or No
- Teacher: See the results on your screen

You can run the Teacher Clicker from an Android phone, or any computer / smartphone by going to l.socrative.com.

The 21st Century Digital Citizen - brainstorm
Good pedagogy needs to include a large focus on the Affective domain and helping our students develop strong moral ethics, accepting the responsibility of being a global citizen and online safety.
How are we addressing this in our classrooms?

tip-Upload pictures to flickr via email
flickr has a new feature that allows you to upload images via email. This is a great feature to use if you are behind a firewall that doesn't allow access to flickr, or if you want to upload images from a mobile device that has email but not web capability.

To set this up, you need to find out your flickr email address. Log in to flickr then select the "Your Account" link in the "You" tab. Once you get to the "Your Account" page, you'll see a tab labeled "Email", click on it. On this you'll see an email address labeled "Your Flickr upload email". This is the address you mail picture to to get them upload onto flickr.

You can email multiple pictures at once. But if you limit yourself to one picture per email, the subject of the email will be converted to the title of the picture, and any text in the body of the email will be converted to the description of the photo. You can also include tags for your pictures.
